Claim: The previous government was only able to build 25 lakh houses in five years. However, in the last 5 years, around 1.25 crore have been built.

Fact: False. The previous government constructed 12.3 million (1.23 crore) houses, almost five times the number of houses claimed by the PM, in their last five years. The current government built 11.1 million (1.11 crore) houses in its first four years since 2014.

Explanation: According to the numbers available on two Rajya Sabha (here, here) answers, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government constructed a total of 12.3 million (1.23 crore) houses as part of the Indira Awas Yojana (IAY) in their five years between 2009-10 and 2013-14.

The BJP government constructed a total of 11.1 million (1.11 crore) houses in their first four years between 2014-15 and 2017-18 under IAY and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana which was launched in June 2015.

This count is only for rural houses for both governments.
