Fact: False. The proposal for increasing the minimum pension to Rs 1,000 per month was agreed by the Department of Expenditure under the Ministry of Finance on January 21, 2014, four months before the current government came to power.

Explanation: The proposal for increasing the minimum pension to Rs 1,000 per month was agreed by the Department of Expenditure under the Ministry of Finance–during the United Progressive Alliance government’s second term–on January 21, 2014 by providing budgetary support in the financial year 2014-15, a Lok Sabha reply on February 10, 2014, shows.

“Based on the approval of the Union Cabinet, the Employees’ Pension Scheme, 1995 (EPS) was amended on 19.08.2014 to incorporate the provision for providing a minimum pension of Rs 1,000 per month for the financial year 2014-15,” press information bureau release on April 29, 2015 said.
