Fact: Misleading, 91.4% of toilets built in the state were in rural areas. Further, in at least 25% households that own a toilet, at least one person defecated in the open.
Explanation: Close to 6.5 million toilets were constructed in Madhya Pradesh but a majority of them (91.4%) were constructed in rural areas. As of July 2018, 5.88 million toilets were constructed in rural Madhya Pradesh under Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin).
The number of toilets constructed in the urban areas in the state is around 1/10th of that. As of February 2019, 552,859 toilets had been constructed in urban areas in Madhya Pradesh. All the 378 urban local bodies had declared themselves open defecation free in October 2017. Yet in 25% of the households with toilets, at least one person defecated in the open, IndiaSpend reported in January 2019.
