Explanation: Of the 543 elected seats in the Lok Sabha, 84 are reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC) and 47 for Scheduled Tribes (ST), together forming 24% of the total Lok Sabha strength. This is because Articles 330 and 332 of the Constitution provide for reservation of seats in states that have a larger proportion of SCs and STs. In 2014, the BJP won more than half the Lok Sabha seats, which included 61 of these reserved seats at the time the Prime Minister tweeted this statement.
There are no Muslim MPs in the BJP in the Lok Sabha, compared to four each from the Congress and Trinamool Congress. In the Rajya Sabha, the BJP has two Muslim MPs, compared to four from the Congress.
The BJP has two Christian MPs in the Lok Sabha–both in seats reserved for Anglo-Indians–compared to eight Christians MPs from the Congress. In the Rajya Sabha, the BJP has one Christian member, compared to seven Christian MPs from the Congress.
